Functional traits related to competition for light influence tree diameter increments in a biodiversity manipulation experiment

چکیده

Understanding how functional traits and diversity modulate plant interactions within forests is becoming a widespread research goal in ecology. We applied neighbourhood analysis to Mediterranean biodiversity manipulation experiment (IDENT-Macomer) assess the importance of predicting tree diameter increments (DI) mixed forest. used weigh competition index (NCI) dispersion (FDis), which metric. found that affect competitive performance across species forest resource acquisition based primarily on trait hierarchy. also related for light, such as maximum height (Hmax), are best predictors DI. Our results reveal NCI more reliable predictor than FDis, but combination both effects helps better explain differences Finally, our findings show gathering data practise should be prioritised management due predictive FDis experiments with high density diversity.

Early positive effects of tree species richness on herbivory in a large-scale forest biodiversity experiment influence tree growth

Despite the importance of herbivory for the structure and functioning of species-rich forests, little is known about how herbivory is affected by tree species richness, and more specifically by random vs. non-random species loss. We assessed herbivore damage and its effects on tree growth in the early stage of a large-scale forest biodiversity experiment in subtropical China that features rando...

Functional traits and plasticity in response to light in seedlings of four Iberian forest tree species.

We investigated the differential roles of physiological and morphological features on seedling survivorship along an experimental irradiance gradient in four dominant species of cool temperate-Mediterranean forests (Quercus robur L., Quercus pyrenaica Willd., Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus pinaster Ait.). The lowest photochemical efficiency (F(v)/F(m) in dark-adapted leaves) was reached in deep ...

Competition for light causes plant biodiversity loss after eutrophication.

Human activities have increased the availability of nutrients in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In grasslands, this eutrophication causes loss of plant species diversity, but the mechanism of this loss has been difficult to determine. Using experimental grassland plant communities, we found that addition of light to the grassland understory prevented the loss of biodiversity caused by eutr...

A factorial experiment for heritability estimation of the reproductive traits in Persian sturgeon, Acipenser persicus

Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) is one of the most valuable species of fish native to the Caspian Sea and Iran's waters. This study was designed to estimate heritability of Persian sturgeon eggs. In this study, 3 wild Persian sturgeons caught from the south coast of the Caspian Sea in Guilan and transferred to fish breeding programs in Shahid Beheshti rearing and propagation complex were ...

Using a Multi-Trait Approach to Manipulate Plant Functional Diversity in a Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function Experiment

A frequent pattern emerging from biodiversity-ecosystem function studies is that functional group richness enhances ecosystem functions such as primary productivity. However, the manipulation of functional group richness goes along with major disadvantages like the transformation of functional trait data into categories or the exclusion of functional differences between organisms in the same gr...
